Maritime Museum Reschedules Door County Lighthouse Walk

The popular Door County Lighthouse Walk, a May event for the past 15 years, has been rescheduled to the second weekend in June beginning 2009. Next year’s Walk will take place June 13 – 14.

The Maritime Museum’s board of directors pointed to unpredictable weather and limits on family involvement as two primary reasons for the time change.

“Boat tours have become an important segment of the walk,” said the museum’s interim director Jon Gast. “Poor weather played havoc with last year’s schedule and has also resulted in less than ideal conditions in previous years. While June doesn’t insure successful boat tours, it improves the probably of better conditions.”

Also, the change will open up the walk experience to a broader spectrum of lighthouse lovers since it will take place after many schools close and summer vacations begin.

The Lighthouse Walk will have a similar look to previous years. In addition to the boat tours, there is the traditional self-guided mainland walk which in the past years has featured the Sherwood and Canal Station lights in the Sturgeon Bay area, the Ridges Range Lights and Cana Island Lighthouse and Tower near Baileys Harbor, and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park. The Friday evening Keeper’s Kin social is also a popular event on the schedule.

Tickets sales, both by phone or online, will begin in early spring. For more information, call 920.743.5958 or email Jon Gast at [email protected].
