Meditation in Motion

Master Wasentha Young practices T’ai Chi.

“I did what they did,” says Master Wasentha Young, reflecting on mimicking the slow motion T’ai Chi movements of who were to become her mentors in 1968. “At a certain point I began to change the way I perceived myself. My mind and body connection started changing.”

She then pursued this ancient practice, eventually opening her own studio – Peaceful Dragon School in Ann Arbor, Michigan – and visiting Door County at least once a year to lead a weekend seminar of T’ai Chi. This year’s seminar will take place May 11 – 13 at the Old Gibraltar Town Hall in Fish Creek.

“Door County is a home away from home,” says Young. “I love the land, the community; I love the sunrise on the east and the sunset on the west.”

Over the weekend, Young will lead a series of sessions, some focusing on energy, others on relaxation, and one of mediation, touch, and sound. These sessions are open to all – beginner and experienced participants.

“Many people are familiar with T’ai Chi and don’t even know it,” says Young of the ancient Chinese practice with origins dating back to 600 BC.

“It is a series of movements linked together in a continuous, slow, mindful way,” says Young. “You become aware of how you are moving your body – it’s relaxing and increases balance.”

The seminar, sponsored by Open Door Tae Kwon Do of Sturgeon Bay, encourages all to participate and offers the opportunity to continue practicing under the direction of many Door County instructors who were mentored by Master Young.
