Mothers & Others Day at Write On Features Bookmobile, Storytelling

Write On, Door County will host a Mothers & Others Day open house on Saturday, May 11, to celebrate individuals who shaped our lives with love, wisdom, and kindness. The free event welcomes readers and writers of all ages for a day full of creativity, writing, and fun — indoors and out.

The day begins at 10 am with the dedication of Write On’s new Olson Family Memorial Council Ring. The memorial is dedicated to Yvonne Bevry Olson and Jane Anne Perkey, two mothers who inspired a lifelong love of reading and writing in their families and who inspired the day’s celebration. The communal outdoor meeting space, designed by Ralph Murre, features seating, a fireplace, and a sculptural pergola which pays homage to the original farmhouse that once stood on the Write On property. 

Activities will take place throughout the Write On campus from 10 am – 3 pm. The day will feature creative writing and art projects for children and adults, readings by students and local authors and food from Mauricio’s Mexican food truck. There will also be opportunities to record your family’s stories with the Mothers & Others storytelling booth and audio recording center.

Plus, the Door County Bookmobile will be on hand for children’s book readings and book giveaways. Come see this newly restored piece of history that brought the joy of reading and storytelling to rural Door County families for decades.

Visitors can enjoy guided hikes along the Writer’s Walk, a winding 1.5-mile path through Write On’s 59 acres of verdant woods. Lined with birches and wildflowers, the path features carved cedar benches, along with the late Door County author Norb Blei’s writing coop.
