Nasewaupee Fire Department Starts Sept. 28

At 12:01 am on Sept. 28, a new fire department will officially begin in southern Door County when the Town of Nasewaupee splits from the other three municipalities in the Southern Door Fire Department (SDFD).

Nasewaupee Fire Rescue (NFR) chief Jacob Schartner informed the town’s Fire Committee on Sept. 14 that the department’s creation received state approval earlier this month.

As part of the town changing from the SDFD to NFR, Schartner said there will be a separate page sent out from Door County’s dispatch center upon the split taking effect.

Schartner also presented the committee with options for changing the decals on the trucks and patches on the firefighters’ turnout gear.

The committee recommended having KBD of Sturgeon Bay remove and install the decals on NFR trucks at a cost not to exceed $2,600, while a Michigan-based company, Turnout Management, was recommended to re-letter turnout gear and make minor repairs as needed on the material.

The towns of Nasewaupee, Forestville and Clay Banks and the Village of Forestville formed the SDFD in an operating agreement approved in 1980.

That agreement included a provision Nasewaupee exercised in which it could leave the department and purchase the fire station in the town and the equipment in it.

NFR will be staffed by some firefighters and emergency medical responders who are leaving the SDFD as well as other personnel who will be joining the new department.
