Peninsula State Park Offers Guided Hikes for April

In April, Peninsula State Park offers naturalist hikes. Visitors are welcome to see spring unfold on guided hikes with Kathleen Harris, who has been Peninsula State Park’s full-time naturalist for 20 years. The 1-2 pm Saturday hikes are free, but a state park sticker is required.

On April 7, meet the park naturalist at Weborg Point. Watch for migrating waterfowl and learn why this point of land was once called Claflin’s Point. Bring binoculars if you have them. It’s easy hiking, less than a mile, but the trail may be muddy.

On April 14, meet the park naturalist at Nicolet Beach. Learn about the summer estate that once stood on Horseshoe Island while watching for northern flickers and song sparrows. The hike will follow a trail along “Shanty Bay” to Nicolet Trail. Bring binoculars if you have them. It’s  moderate hiking, about a mile, but the trail may be muddy.

Both hikes count toward Like to Hike, a custom program that encourages healthy, sustainable recreation. The Nature Center will be open 12-3 pm every Saturday in April. For more information call 920.868.3258.
