Sturgeon Bay Hosts Annual Shipyard Tours

The Rotary Club of Sturgeon Bay and the Door County Rotary Interact Club present the annual tour of the Sturgeon Bay shipyards Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 from 9 am – 2 pm.

Three facilities, all located on 1st Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay, will be participating this year. Palmer Johnson Yachts, Bay Shipbuilding Co. and Great Lakes Yacht Services will open their doors to the public for this once a year event. Start the tour at any one of the facilities and see first hand the efforts of the many professionals who work in Door County’s ship repair and new construction businesses. Guided walking tours are offered at Bay Shipbuilding and Great Lakes Yacht Services, while self guided walking tours are available at Palmer Johnson Yachts. Staff is available at all three locations to answer questions. Many of the sites also offer the sale of merchandise complete with company logos.

Watch for the complimentary Door County Trolley, which will be delivering tour participants from one tour location to another between the hours of 9 am –2 pm.

Tickets will be available at the various shipyard gates the day of the event. Ticket prices are $10 per person for each adult. Tickets for children ages 10 to 17 years are $5 and children under 10 years of age are free. Advance tickets are available after April 19 at the Door County Maritime Museum or the Sturgeon Bay Visitor and Convention Bureau, both in Sturgeon Bay.

Rotary Sturgeon Bay and Interact, a teen service group affiliated with Rotary and with the Door County YMCA, organized this annual tour. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit local, national and international youth projects. For more information please call Trish Konowalski at 920.746.8460.
