Baileys Harbor electors unanimously approved the purchase of 10 acres to the west of the Baileys Harbor Recreational Park for $102,000. There are no set plans yet for the parcel, referred to as the Stieglitz property. Electors approved the purchase with an overwhelming tally of 5 – 0.

• The Door County Waste and Recycling Center of Sturgeon Bay announced expanded hours. The facility located at 1509 Division Rd. will be open from 7 am – 3:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; from 7 am – 6 pm Wednesday; and 7 am – noon Saturday. Call 920.746.7434 for more information.

• Existing home sales in Door County dropped 11 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2007, but the median price of home sales jumped 12 percent, from $227,300 to $254,500. Statewide homes sales dropped 16.7 percent.

Liberty Grove electors voted to approve the purchase of six acres adjacent to the Garret Bay Boat Launch in Ellison Bay at a price tag of $466,000 Nov. 13.

• The Town of Liberty Grove continued gathering information on a proposal to construct a large marina, park, and museum complex at the site of the current Weborg Fishing Dock and surrounding properties. The idea was first broached three years ago by waterfront property owners who would prefer not to sell their land to individual private developers. The estimated cost of the project is $14 million.

• Liberty Grove voter turnout exceeded 80 percent Nov. 4, as 1,146 residents cast ballots. Wisconsin had the second highest turnout in the nation, at 70.89 percent, down from 73.82 percent in 2004. Minnesota ranked first, with 75.86 percent turnout. The national percentage was estimated at 61 percent.

• The drinking habits of Wisconsinites caught the attention of the New York Times Sunday, Nov. 16. A feature story in the National section expressed surprise at the soft treatment drunk driving offenders receive and local attitudes toward excessive alcohol consumption.

Door County Cherryland Airport in Sturgeon Bay was granted $473,685 to pursue numerous projects at the strip, including fueling system upgrades, land acquisition, new terminal design, and paving.

• The Sturgeon Bay Plan Commission asked the city’s Parks and Recreation Committee to investigate turning downtown one-way streets into two-way streets.

Gibraltar/ Sevastopol boys soccer coach (and Peninsula Pulse Editor) Allison Vroman was profiled for a story that appeared in the Nov. 12 edition of the Appleton Post-Crescent. Vroman has helmed the Vikings to a conference title and a regional title in her first two years as varsity head coach.
