Traffic/Speed Counter Statistics Released

Welcome to Notes from the Grove, providing information about Liberty Grove town government to residents and visitors.

• With the addition of Grand View Park and the launch site at Rowleys Bay, the town has 14 parks in addition to one state park and two county parks. Some of the parks are designed for swimming and others for scenic viewing. A brochure is available at the town office and the Door County North information office located in Ellison Bay.

• The town also has approximately 100 miles of paved roads and several miles of unpaved roads. A crew of four men provide all the maintenance in the parks, four cemeteries and the roads, in addition to maintaining the various pieces of equipment that are used for mowing, plowing, sanding and general repairs when needed. They have done the prep work on Isle View Road and are often called out any time of the day or night to remove fallen trees on the roadways. It takes approximately one month of five-day work weeks to mow all the roads. Depending upon weather and workload the roads are mowed two to three times a year.

If you have the opportunity, say thank you to them, as they are dedicated to their jobs and the town.

• The placement of the traffic/speed counter, placed by the town crew, provided some interesting statistics on road usage and speed. It was initially placed on numerous Garrett Bay Road locations starting in April and continuing into June. Traffic was measured in both directions.

The period from June 3 – 10, with the counter placed to measure northbound traffic at Fitzgerald Park, had a total of 3,032 vehicles. From May 6 – 13, at The Clearing northbound, 3,493 vehicles were counted. From May 13 – 20, located near the Telfer residence, there were 3,834 vehicles. The counter was placed on Highway 42 just north of Isle View Road in late May, where the speed limit is 35 mph, measuring traffic heading north. It was there for two weeks. The total count was 13,220 for the number of cars driving over 35 mph and 7,959 cars going faster than 55 mph. The counter will be placed throughout the town during the summer and fall months.

• The highway committee did a walk of Garrett Bay Road on July 3 to help in their decision regarding shoulder width and clear zone. It was anticipated they would make a decision at a meeting later in the day on their recommendation to the town board.

• A reminder that the public informational hearing on Garrett Bay Road improvements will be held July 11 at 7 pm in the Town Hall. The highway committee will conduct the hearing with Chairman Walker chairing the hearing. No action will be taken at the hearing. The town board will be present to listen to comments but will not be in session. A decision is scheduled for the regular board meeting on July 17. Public input will not be taken at that meeting on the proposed improvements.
