Wal-Mart Gets Preliminary OK

The Sturgeon Bay City Council approved to a preliminary Planned Unit Development (PUD) application from Wal-Mart at the Oct. 6 meeting.

Wal-Mart has proposed a 120,000 square-foot supercenter at their location on Egg Harbor Road.

Econo Foods, located next door to Wal-Mart, presented several objections to the plan. Wal-Mart expects to devote 25,000 square feet of the supercenter to groceries, up from about 5,000 now. The economic impact study completed last spring speculated that a Wal-Mart supercenter would likely result in the closing of at least one of Sturgeon Bay’s two large grocery stores.

The PUD must now pass through the Plan Commission and City Council again for final approval.
