2010 Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up

To John Lowry, for being that rare representative to follow through on campaign promises. When he ran for Town Chairman he promised to improve communication between residents and the board, and he promised to bring any proposal to buy Gills Rock shoreline to the voters. He has done both, dutifully submitting updates to this paper each issue, and holding a town meeting to vote on the Gills Rock shoreline purchase in September.

Thumbs Up

To businesses that stay open in the winter. We know it’s tough, not profitable, and often just plain boring. But your efforts give us places to gather, to get supplies without a 45-minute drive, and give us a sliver of hope of attracting visitors to the peninsula in the off-season.

Thumbs Up

To the Door County Silent Sports Alliance, for organizing groups of volunteers to improve ski and bike trails in the parks and fighting for better access and infrastructure. Your noise and persistence helped Door County get an $80,000 grant toward the creation of a countywide bike plan.

Thumbs Up

To the Door County Triathlon, for not only carving a niche for a new kind of event to attract a new kind of visitor, but for donating $25,000 each to the Door County YMCA and the Friends of Door County Parks.
