The Sturgeon Bay Noon Rotary presented a check in the amount of $500 to Pam Busch, Mobility Manager for Door-Tran on June 3. Funds received from the Rotary will support the voucher program and support Door-Tran’s fundraising campaign.

Beginning in November 2008, the half-price travel voucher program has served over 170 individuals and has subsidized over 7,000 rides to date. Trips taken have been to local businesses, health care facilities, work and social events.

To date, Door-Tran has operated under the wings of United Way of Door County as fiscal agent. Since Door-Tran was granted 501(c)3 status, Door-Tran is fundraising to become fiscally independent from United Way.

Door-Tran’s mission is to make transportation more affordable, available, and accessible to all residents of Door County. Door-Tran also offers transportation information, referral and free countywide car pool matching for individuals interested in sharing rides.

The Miller Family Music Education Scholarship has been awarded to Gibraltar High School Senior, Curtis Massad. The substantial scholarship will cover tuition, books, and room and board for four years, as long as Curtis maintains a 2.5 grade point average. He will attend UW-Milwaukee in the fall.

“I passed up a $26,000 scholarship in football for this,” explained Massad. “I figured I could do a lot more with a career in music.”

In 6th grade Curtis wanted to play the clarinet, but when he approached Charlie Eckhardt, the instrumental music teacher at Gibraltar Schools, Eckhardt said, “You look like a tuba player.”

“I was the 1st person at GHS to start on a tuba,” said Curtis. “In order to practice I was given a miniature tuba to use at home. In the 7th grade, Brendan Regnier and I started a polka band – the first one in the school’s history.”

Eventually Curtis was provided with a $12,000 instrument to use in concert performances, but it will remain behind as part of the school’s assets. To save for a new tuba, Curtis is waiting tables at the Summertime Restaurant in Fish Creek.
