38 Teams Compete in 4th Door County Pond Hockey Tournament

More than 250 players competed at the Feb. 4 Door County Pond Hockey Tournament on Kangaroo Lake in Baileys Harbor.

Conditions were perfect for the 4th annual tournament in which 38 teams from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and Door County competed on nine rinks for the coveted Stanley Thermos.

Champions were crowned in six divisions, among them was the women’s team, Ponies and Zambonies, who competed in the all-male Open C division and emerged victorious. Other winners were: Open A – Fitzgerald Freighters; Open B – Bar Room Heroes; Classic A – Door County Cherry Pickers; Classic B – Mooseknuckle; and Legends – Big Sticks.

It was the second straight title in the top division for Fitzgerald Freighters, who claimed a hard-fought victory over Hamm’s Hounds, 9-8, in the championship game in a division that featured several players with top collegiate and NHL experience, including former Blackhawks winger David Mackey.
