Tina Stawiki of Sturgeon Bay accepts the first place award of locally produced maple syrup.

As runners cross the finish line of Running Green for Crossroads trail event on June 21, they will each receive a potted evergreen tree as a reminder to live and run in environmentally conscious ways. This marks the fifth year that Evergreen Nursery has provided participants of all ages and abilities locally grown trees as they complete the 2k, 5k or 10k trail run or walk at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay.

The top three finishers in each age group in the 10k and 5k events will be awarded locally produced products: Henschel’s Maple Syrup for first place finishers, Lakeshore perennial plant to second place, and Wienke’s local honey for third place finishers. The overall top male and female finisher for both the 5k and 10k are additionally awarded a one-of-a-kind pottery bowl made exclusively for this race from Clay on Steele in Algoma.

Not in the top three? Sturgeon Bay Utilities will provide all participants a market bag, eco lightbulb, safety flasher, night-light, energy saver booklet and the opportunity to win a “green” door prize. There will also be locally sourced ice cream, Lautenbach cherries, and Black Walnut Guest House granola for all participants.

This year, Running Green for Crossroads is teaming up with Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program. If your shoes are worn out, drop them off at Crossroads on the day of the race. Nike will grind them down to create a material called Nike Grind, which is used to make high-quality sports surfaces. For more information, visit crossroadsrun.com.
