A red letter day. Lay out the red carpet. Red states, red hats or Little Red Riding Hood. The color red promises excitement and activity. Red can announce, “I’m ready for anything, let’s try something new.” There’s an Australian Shepherd named Red at the Door County Humane Society right now that brings all these connotations to mind.

Australian Shepherds are intelligent animals, bred to work – they need to have activity and rewards for doing what their genetic make-up tells them to do. Red is almost 3 years old; he lived with a family in Southern Door who could not keep up with his need for stimulation and assignments, and so confined him to a crate for much of the day…the worst outcome for an Australian Shepherd.

The profile for Red’s perfect adopter would include outdoor activity with this dog, the interest and ability to keep him busy with trips to the dog park or bonding through a training class, and affection for the quiet times. He has lived with children as well as other dogs. Red was recently neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Dog adoption fee is $150.

The Door County Humane Society, located at 3475 Park Drive (County PD – the road to Potawatomi State Park), Sturgeon Bay, is open for adoption Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon – 4 pm. For more information call 920.746.1111 or visit dooranimals.com.

The DCHS Fall Fest booth is located just south of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. DCHS invites everyone to walk with them in the parade on Oct. 18. Gather at 10:30 am on Maple Drive (look for the red van).
