“Tulips and Bird” by Lynn Gilchrist, oil on canvas.

Artwork by Lynn Gilchrist of Sturgeon Bay is currently on display in the lobby gallery of Third Avenue Playhouse. “Conversation Pieces” is the title of the show, which comprises 20 small still-lifes in oil.

Gilchrist is best known for her landscape paintings, which have been widely exhibited. The subjects of the paintings on view, however, are artist-made animals and objects that she collects such as carved dogs, porcelain eggplants and clay birds. “I like to pose them as if they are communicating with each other,” says the artist. “The juxtapositions are kind of funny and it helps that inanimate animals stand very still.”

Gilchrist holds an art degree from Oberlin College and has won a number of awards for her work. Her work is shown courtesy of Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor, where she is an exhibiting artist.

“Conversation Pieces” is up through April 18 at Third Avenue Playhouse, located at 239 N. Third Ave. in Sturgeon Bay. Lobby hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 pm and from noon to show time on performance days.
