On June 18, a group of students, teachers, parents and neighbors gathered at the Dome House in Sturgeon Bay to celebrate the publication of Young Minds Inspired by Art. This book is the culmination of months of work initiated by local artist Hermke Timm and local art teacher Jane Moeller to capture the thoughts and impressions of Sevastopol fourth-graders after viewing Timm’s artwork.

The 80-page, hard-bound, coffee-table book features 36 original works of art and a description of each piece written by the fourth-grade students. The two Sevastopol teachers who share the supervision of this class were enthusiastic about the idea, process and outcome.

“For the students, this is an incredible opportunity for them to showcase their creative thinking, insight and creative writing,” teacher Joel Schauske said.

About 40 people attended the celebration, during which each student received a copy of the book. Timm is considering repeating this project with another class.
