Berns Takes Third-Place Podium Finish at ERX Motor Park

Colton Berns, a 15-year-old sophomore at Gibraltar High School, won a third-place podium finish at ERX Motor Park. His father, Keven Berns; and a family friend, Jeff Wood, built the off-road vehicle from a rolling chassis, and Rick Hembel assisted with the welding.

Berns’ race car is a 1600 buggy with a custom-built chassis; it weighs 1,680 pounds; and it has a modified type one 1600 mL Volkswagen air- cooled engine. The car is capable of speeds around 80 mph and runs on a dirt short course off-road track with left and right turns, elevation changes and jumps. Follow Berns’ journey on Instagram (@coltonberns_307).
