BIKE, PEDESTRIAN PATHS PLANNED FOR MEMORIAL DRIVE

The Sturgeon Bay Common Council passed a resolution Oct. 3 to authorize the construction of new bicycle and pedestrian facilities as part of the improvements planned on Memorial Drive from South 12th Avenue to South 15th Avenue and on South 15th Avenue from Memorial Drive to Utah Street.

The city will be applying for Local Roads Improvement Program (LRIP) grant funding through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the improvements.

City Engineer Chad Shefchik said there will be a new LRIP grant cycle in November to provide grants similar to the one the city received for this year’s Michigan Street project.

Shefchik said the grants could include milling and paving Memorial Drive from South 9th Avenue to to South 15th Avenue and completing missing sidewalk sections along Memorial Drive and South 15th Avenue.

“Whether or not the missing sidewalk sections are added, the City of Sturgeon Bay will be able to apply for grants,” he said. “However, completing these gaps in the sidewalk network would likely improve the city’s chances of receiving a grant.”
