Boys Baseball: Clippers Sweep Wolves

A single run made the difference twice on Tuesday when Sturgeon Bay’s baseball team swept a Packerland Conference doubleheader at Algoma.

“[Tuesday night] was great baseball by both teams,” said Clippers head coach Neal Henrigillis. “Algoma has a phenomenal team, and their pitchers did a great job. This was a fantastic night of Packerland Conference baseball. Fortunately we came out on top with some gritty at-bats by guys like Rex Brusky and Patrick Haese and of course phenomenal pitching to keep up in it the entire game.”

Brusky and Haese helped spark Sturgeon Bay’s four-run rally in the seventh inning of game two, which the Clippers won, 5-4.

In the final frame of the second game, Brusky and Haese each tallied a hit which, coupled with a Trey VanderLeest walk, loaded the bases for Bryce Plzak, who tied the game with a double. Caleb Plzak then drove in the game’s winning run with a base hit.

The Clippers won game one against the Wolves, 4-3. Eight separate batters recorded a hit for Sturgeon Bay, including a double from Danny Lodl and Curt Meyer.

The Clippers used multiple pitchers in both games, allowing 14 hits over 14 innings, with Bryce Plzak throwing three shutout innings in relief to win the first game and Meyer taking the mound in the seventh inning of game two and recording the victory.

Sturgeon Bay, which improved to 5-1 in the conference and 7-2 overall, returns to action Thursday when the Clippers host a league doubleheader against Southern Door at Memorial Field starting at 5 pm.
