Boys Baseball: Clippers 3-1 in Packerland

Sturgeon Bay’s baseball team has opened Packerland Conference play 3-1, sweeping Saturday’s road doubleheader against NEW Lutheran, 5-3 and 10-1, and then splitting Monday’s home twin bill against Oconto, winning the first game 10-4 and losing the night cap 6-3.

Clippers head coach Neal Henrigillis said they played well in the first game against the Blue Devils.

“Oconto is a good team, and anytime you can defeat them soundly, it’s a step forward,” he said. “We could have taken both halves of the doubleheader, but couldn’t stay mentally focused enough in game two and let blunders get the best of us.”

Sturgeon Bay pounded out 16 hits in the first game against the Blue Devils, with Braylon LaRoche and Caleb Plzak tallying three each and Bryce Plzak, Danny Lodl and Garrett Ulberg with two apiece.

Brody Kollath started on the mound for the Clippers and pitched four shutout innings in recording the win.

Sturgeon Bay, which hosts a non-conference game Thursday against Luxemburg-Casco, plays its next conference doubleheader April 23 at Algoma.
