Boys Baseball: Vikings Open Season 1-1

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team opened its season last weekend at a tournament at Adams-Friendship, where the Vikings split their two games.

On Friday, Gibraltar/Washington Island scored all its runs in the first three innings when it defeated St. Mary’s Springs, 11-8.

Of the Vikings’ nine hits, four players tallied two apiece. Marshall Maltby doubled and singled and drove in three runs. Luke Rericha singled twice with 3 RBI. Aaron Brey and Bennett Isaacson both added two singles.

On the mound, Isaacson worked the first two innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits with four walks and striking out two. Brey pitched the final five frames, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Lakeside Lutheran 8, Gibraltar/Washington Island 0

The Vikings could only muster one hit Saturday when they were shut out by Lakeside Lutheran, 8-0.

Brady Kita, who singled and walked twice for GibraltarWashington Island, also alternated on defense between being behind the plate and on the mound.

The Vikings’ starting pitcher who took the loss, Rericha, worked three innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits with four walks and a hit batter while striking out two. Kita threw the next three innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with a hit batter and a strikeout.

Lakeside Lutheran scored five runs in the top of the seventh when Cameron Munao and Liam Lindenberg split pitching duties for Gibraltar/Washington Island.

The Vikings are scheduled to play their first home games of the season this week when they host a Packerland Conference doubleheader Tuesday against Sevastopol.
