Celebrate Newport Wilderness Day Sept. 4

Sept. 4 is Newport Wilderness Day at Newport State Park. This event was started in 1992 as a way for the members of Newport Wilderness Society, the park’s friends group, to showcase their beautiful wilderness park.

Volunteers lead hikes on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, covering many areas of interest. This year’s programs include: 8 am – Coffee on the Beach, donated by Base Camp, meet at Lot 3; 9 am – geology hike with Jack Travis, meet at Lot 3; 10 am – learn about the trees of Door County with Tom Wolfe, meet at the Nature Center; 11 am – bug walk with entomologist Dick Smythe, bring a butterfly net, meet at the Nature Center; 1 pm – Open Door Bird Sanctuary Raptor Program, meet some of Open Door’s resident birds, meet at the Nature Center; 2 pm – Hotz Family History led by Steve Uglinica, meet at Europe Bay Town Park at the end of Europe Bay Road.
