Community Tree Planting Oct. 20-21 in Sister Bay

The Climate Change Coalition of Door County is taking its tree-planting shovels to The Shoals apartment complex in Sister Bay on Oct. 20 and 21.

The tree planting is sponsored by Door County Medical Center and Bridenhagen Tree and Landscape, and coordinated by the Climate Change Coalition of Door County, which created The Big Plant that takes place in Door County each spring.

Volunteers will plant an estimated 300 conifer trees, said Jeff Lutsey, director of the Climate Change Coalition. The planting is

“This is kind of a trial run for us,” Lutsey said. “This is a highly visible location near the entrance to Sister Bay where we want to do this to both improve the environment for the people who live in these apartments, but also beautify the view corridor for people driving by.”

More than 100 apartments have been built to the north, south and west of the planting area in recent years. That construction required the disturbance of a lot of land trees. While it will take time for the new plantings to grow in, Lutsey pointed to the plantings alongside the nearby Northern Door Children’s Center as an example of what it can look like in 20 years.

Volunteers should RSVP by calling or texting Jeff Lutsey at 920.217.4304. The Shoals is located at 10466 Shoals Court in Sister Bay.
