County Board Update

The Door County Board of Supervisors will review the new county comprehensive plan at its Oct. 27 meeting.

The Resource Planning Committee (RPC) rejected the expansion of the Baileys Harbor core map last month, putting to rest, for now, the most hotly debated aspect of the plan. Mariah Goode, head of the Door County Planning Department, said there have been small changes made to the Town of Gardner map and other minor corrections. However, the Baileys Harbor map change was the only major alteration since the round of open houses in August and September.

“Most of the people that still had concerns voiced them at the RPC meetings,” Goode said.

The Door County Comprehensive Plan 2030 will be used to guide zoning and development decisions throughout the county. The state requires all counties to have a plan approved before the end of this year.

County Administrator Mike Serpe said the board is also expected to discuss a zoning dispute in the Town of Sturgeon Bay.

The town is appealing the Board of Adjustment’s (BOA) decision to overturn an RPC denial of Premier Concrete Incorporated’s application for a non-metallic mining permit. Premier Concrete got the permit to quarry on a 102-acre parcel of land it owns. The town claims the company did not file the paperwork in time, so the BOA decision should be over-ruled.

On Oct. 2, the town was successful in petitioning the RPC to rezone all of its general agriculture land to primary agriculture, a use that doesn’t allow for mining operations. The move was made to prevent any new mines from opening in the town.
