County Boasts State Swimming Champs

Notes from Coach Mike McHugh: In a year that marked one of the most successful seasons in team history, the DCY swim team saved their best efforts for the last meet – the YMCA State Championships held at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.

The team placed 5th out of 24 teams in a combined overall score. DCY girls placed 7th with 718 points and the DCY boys placed 3rd with 1,114 points at the meet, overall. The team recorded 79 percent “Best Times” for the meet in 172 total events – 151 individual and 21 relays. The 8 & under girls team stole the show, placing 1st in Wisconsin in total points.

Highlights of the 8 & under girls included a spectacular performance in both the 100-yard-medley relay by Cassie Rankin, Sylvia Townsend, Julia Michalski and Katie Norton placing 2nd. While Cassie Rankin, Julia Michalski, Katie Norton and Sylvia Townsend became State Champions in the 100-yard-freestyle relay.

Cassie Rankin had a spectacular meet, crowned the State Champion in the 25-yard-free, 50-yard-free, and 100-yard-IM. Cassie was out-touched in the 100-yard-free by less than a 1/10th of a second, just missing the full sweep of four individual State Champion titles.

Overall, DCY swim team took home 6 State Records, 14 State Championship titles, eleven 2nd places, and six 3rd places. Congratulations to all the DCY state swimmers!
