In keeping with its mission of promoting community interest in the creative arts, the Door County Art League (DCAL) is supporting local high school arts through the purchase of art supplies for students, and honoring a student artist with a special merit award and scholarship. This year DCAL is honoring Sophia Braschnewitz, a recent graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School. Braschnewitz will attend Marquette University this fall, with an emphasis on the arts and humanities.

Braschnewitz was among 20 regional high school artists competing for the award. Master artist Lynn Gilchrist, who judged the entries, said she was impressed by the boldness and originality of Braschnewitz’s work. “The two portraits, one in oil and one in watercolor, were more about strong colors and interesting application of the paint than creating a likeness,” said Gilchrist.

As scholarship winner, Braschnewitz will participate with a piece in the League’s Annual Showcase at the Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay in August. The opening reception will be held Aug. 21, 7 to 8:30 pm. The Annual Showcase exhibit will be on display Aug. 22 through Oct. 18.

The Door County Art League Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, 11 am to 3 pm. It is located in the courtyard of the Top of the Hill shops in Fish Creek, at the corner of Highway 42 and Spring Road. For more information, visit doorcountyartleague.org.
