DCAL Selects Jane Hamann as Artist of the Week

Jane Hamann of Egg Harbor, Door County Art League’s artist of the week for July 2-8, recalls summer trips to Door County to pick cherries in her aunt’s orchard as an early incubator for her interest in nature and art.

She earned a bachelor of science in humanities with a concentration in art and design from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc. She was certified to teach art, but once her children were in school she chose to start an advertising and marketing firm in Manitowoc, which she operated for 16 years. During this time she continued to take art classes and enjoyed the different ways of looking at subject matter, especially interpreting the broad spectrum of color found in nature.

Hamann works in pastels and acrylics and occasionally watercolor, but pastels remain her favorite medium. “There is a very special joy for me when the pigments are mixed right on the paper or board,” says Hamann.

New in 2016 Hamann is creating collages with altered papers. “The process really stretches my imagination and that of those who view the finished pieces,” she says.

The DCAL Gallery is located at the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek. The gallery is open daily through Oct. 23, 11 am – 5 pm. For more information, email [email protected], visit doorcountyartleague.org, or find the Door County Art League and Gallery on Facebook.
