Death’s Door BBQ Contest Held Aug. 24

On Aug. 24, Washington Island will host its second annual Death’s Door BBQ contest. This year’s competition promises to be bigger and better than last year’s event, which drew an estimated crowd of 3,000. There will be eight new contestants, ten new Island vendors, new musicians, and children’s activities.

In addition to the expanded list of contestants, another highlight of this year’s event will be the raffle, which features a pair of 40-yard line seats to the Nov. 4 Packers/Bears game. This grand prize also includes a two-night stay at the Astor House B&B in Green Bay. Raffle tickets are available now for $5 each at Mann’s, the Red Cup, the Danish Mill and the Ferry Office. The raffle drawing will be at 4 pm on Saturday, just before the awards ceremony.

On Saturday afternoon, Ted Yoder, National Hammered Dulcimer Champion will perform from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.

Come to the Island Airport when the gates open at 10 am to ensure the best choice of BBQ. For people from the mainland who wish to attend, the Washington Island Ferry from Northport will provide free round-trip shuttle service from the ferry dock to the BBQ contest throughout the day.

All profits support the Washington Island Food Pantry. For a complete schedule, visit deathsdoorbbq.com.
