Domestic Violence Contributes to Homelessness

How is a housing shortage possible in Door County?

According to the Wisconsin Bureau of Census the total population in Door County was 27,785 in 2010. From this number, 20,759 are adults aged 25 years and older. The total number of housing units in Door County is 21,923, of which 8,474 were counted as vacant.

One may think that homelessness in Door County cannot possibly be an issue when our census statistics show an abundance of housing units, but surprisingly enough, HELP of Door County, Inc. is faced with the ongoing struggle to assist families with secure, safe and affordable housing.

Many studies demonstrate that domestic violence can contribute to homelessness, especially among families with children. The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently surveyed 24 cities and identified domestic violence as the primary cause for homelessness. State and local studies also demonstrate the immense impact of domestic violence on homelessness.

Domestic violence is not selective; thus, it can impact anyone, leaving a trail of destruction that leads to poverty and homelessness, even here in Door County. As a rural community, HELP does not have the luxury of operating an emergency shelter for families, and options for our clients are somewhat limited unless we can offer expanded funding to operate safe homes. Also, when families fall at or below poverty levels, there are very limited county resources available to prevent them from total devastation.

Long-term efforts to address homelessness in Door County should include housing that is not only affordable, but also safe. In the meantime, HELP will continue in its efforts to provide supportive services, which address both the safety and financial needs of the families we serve.
