Door County’s Sturgeon Bay Selects McNeil as City Administrator

The Sturgeon Bay City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to elect Stephen McNeil from Winneconne, WI as the new city administrator.

McNeil is the administrator, zoning administrator and economic development director for the village of Winneconne and has been for the last five years.

If he accepts the Sturgeon Bay position after taking a medical exam and receiving a positive background check from the city, Sturgeon Bay will pay McNeil a salary of $83,000 plus a full benefits package. He could take over the administrator duties from Mayor Tom Voegele by Sept. 22.

Aldermen chose McNeil out of four finalists who were interviewed and tested July 26: John Carlson from Peoria, IL, Stephen Crane of Lowell, MA, Barbara Grant from Appleton and McNeil.

The position of city administrator has been vacant since Kevin O’Donnell resigned in February. O’Donnell was recently hired for another administrator position in Massachusetts.
