Fire Damages Sturgeon Bay Garage Structure

A row of detached garages located behind the Alabama Place Apartments at 919 Alabama Place sustained significant damage Aug. 31. The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department was called to the scene shortly before 4 pm.

A cloud of smoke produced by the blaze could be seen billowing from the site through a portion of the city’s east side late that afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Kalin Montevideo said firefighters were able to contain the fire to the detached garage structure without it spreading to the nearby residential areas. The fire apparently started in one of the garages and spread to others in the row, but the cause of the fire remained undetermined as of Sept. 6.

Firefighters, who were on the scene for about three hours, used about 9,800 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
