Fun Park Pulled Helicopter Application

• The Egg Harbor Fun Park has withdrawn its application for a helicopter landing pad. The public hearing originally scheduled for June 11 in the Town of Egg Harbor was cancelled.

• At the regular monthly meeting on June 10, the Gibraltar Board of Education heard a first reading of the amended Employee Handbook. On July 1, the handbook replaces the board’s contracts with union members, but non-union employees have been working under handbook rules for the past year. Board President Fred Anderson pointed out that, according to board policy, the handbook requires a second reading, which will take place at the July meeting, after the handbook goes into effect for all employees. One of the handbook issues the board identified at the meeting is how to deal with Paid Time Off (PTO), which replaces sick days and emergency days under the old contract. District Administrator Tina Van Meer said one teacher has already requested five days of PTO next spring. The board decided to table the teacher’s request until it determines how to administer PTO. The next meeting takes place on July 8 at 7 pm.

• Baileys Harbor Fire Chief Brian Zak has pointed out in past town board meetings that the volunteer fire department puts an emphasis on training, which was proved again late Monday, June 10, when the department responded to a fire at 2215 Ridges Road.

They found a three-stall garage on fire. Assisted by crews from Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Gibraltar, Jacksonport, Liberty Grove and Sister Bay, the firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the garage, although the attached house did suffer some damage. A Ford Model A truck housed in the garage was destroyed.

“It could have been a lot worse than what it was,” Zak said. “All the departments did what they were trained to do.” The property is owned by the late Gerald Muehleck and his wife Carolyn. Zak said the source of the fire is undetermined.

• The City of Sturgeon Bay recently completed a deal to purchase 24.6 acres to add to the city’s industrial park, according to the Door County Economic Development Corporation. Therma-Tron-X, Inc., a local manufacturing company, will purchase three acres of that property.
