Gibraltar Moving from In-person to At-home Learning for K-5 Students

The Gibraltar School District will transition from in-person to remote learning beginning Monday, Jan. 24.

Superintendent Tina Van Meer said in a Jan. 21 communication to the school community that staffing shortages and an increasing number of COVID-positive students and staff have caused her decision.

“In particular, the elementary school has been significantly impacted this week,” Van Meer wrote. “Every grade level has students/staff who have tested positive or are in quarantine. The number of positive cases has doubled since yesterday.”

“This decision has been made with the intention of slowing down the spread of this virus within the building and to ensure staffing levels allow the District to resume in-person teaching and learning as soon as possible,” Van Meer continued.

In-person learning will resume for K-5 students on Monday, Jan. 31.

While there will be no option at all for in-person learning for the younger students next week, students and staff in grades six through 12 will remain in-person at this time. The District will continue to monitor staffing numbers and the degree of spread within the building to determine next steps.
