Greater Escarpment Organization of Door County Raising Funds for Discovery Center

The Greater Escarpment Organization of Door County (GEO-DC) now has two homes – one on land and the other in cyberspace. Founded in 2012, GEO-DC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, seeks to “cultivate knowledge and stewardship of the Niagara Escarpment corridor and its geological, ecological, and cultural wonders in people of all ages and from all walks of life.” So reads the mission statement on the organization’s brand new website, geo-dc.org.

Launching the website followed on the heels of the organization’s purchasing the brick and mortar site at 11876 Hwy 42 in a building that overlooks one of the most iconic vistas in Door County, Grand View Park at the top of the Ellison Bay hill. This will be the future home of the Escarpment Discovery Center. The Discovery Center and grounds will house exhibits and information on all aspects of the 1,000-mile arc that links northeast Wisconsin with the Canadian counterpart on the Bruce Peninsula.

GEO-DC will own the building/Escarpment Discovery Center outright when the organization raises enough funds to pay off the land contract under which the organization is now operating the site. In addition to the purchase of the building and land, GEO-DC is raising funds from grant writing and from personal donors to renovate the building, including plans for an ADA compliant restroom, winterization measures, as well as the possibility of constructing a two-story tower providing an even more spectacular view of the Grand View.
