Habitat to Dedicate Home Wednesday

Habitat for Humanity will dedicate its 33rd home in Door County Dec. 21 at 229 E. Leeward Street in Sturgeon Bay.

The family, community leaders, Habitat staff and volunteers will gather to commemorate the completion of Door County Habitat for Humanity’s final house of the 2011 construction season.

“We are thrilled that we could complete this project in time for the family to celebrate Christmas in its new home” said Rick Nelson, executive director of Habitat’s Door County affiliate. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, speak with the family and tour the home.

The dedication celebration represents the completion of one of four projects started in Door County this year. In July, Habitat painted its first home through the A Brush With Kindness Program, helping a disabled veteran and his wife to beautify and make minor repairs to their home and garage. A second A Brush With Kindness painting project was finished in September for a 94 year old legally blind widow whose home in Sturgeon Bay had not been painted for fifteen years. In late September Habitat finished its first whole house remodel which was also its first Women Build project.

The December 21st dedication reflects the ongoing partnership between Door County Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is providing 75% of the funding for this home as part of the Habitat for Humanity-Thrivent Financial for Lutherans partnership to build affordable homes across the nation. Through this partnership, over 2,000 homes have been built by the two organizations over the past five years.
