Historical Society Dinner Program Focuses on Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

The Door County Historical Society will host its monthly dinner program Susan & Elizabeth: A Friendship of Consequence on May 22. The dinner and program will be held at St. John Bosco School in Sturgeon Bay at 6 pm. “Susan & Elizabeth: A Friendship of Consequence” is a compilation of excerpts from the speeches, writings, and letters of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This historical program is written and performed by Chris Milton portraying Anthony and Susan Kohout portraying Stanton.

In 1851, Anthony and Stanton embarked on a collaboration that evolved into one of the most productive working partnerships in U.S. history. As uncompromising women’s rights leaders, they revolutionized the political and social condition of women in American society. Stanton was the leading voice and philosopher of the women’s rights and suffrage movements while Anthony was the powerhouse who commandeered the legions of women who struggled to win the ballot for American women. These two women worked together for more than 50 years to fight for women’s right to vote.

In June of 1902, Anthony visited Stanton at her home in New York City; it was to be their final conversation. In this imagining of that visit, the two friends reminisce about their long and productive partnership in the struggle for women’s suffrage and are occasionally “transported” back in time as they recall a particular speech or letter.

Doors open at 5:30 pm on May 22 and dinner begins promptly at 6 pm, followed by the play. Plan to arrive early for check-in. St. John Bosco School seventh grade students and parents will serve a family-style dinner of baked chicken and ham, roasted baby reds, corn, rolls, Jell-O, assorted desserts, coffee and milk. St. John Bosco School parking lot is located on Maple Street, just east of Duluth Avenue in Sturgeon Bay.

The dinner and program fee for guests is $25; member fee is $20. To attend the play only, the guest fee is $10 and the member fee is $5.
