Home for the Holidays This Weekend

Cathy Grier welcomed to the Northern Sky stage

Northern Sky Theater is here to help you beat those post-Christmas blues. Home for the Holidays, an annual showcase of some of Door County’s favorite musicians, is the Fish Creek theater company’s way of extending the holiday season – and giving you an excuse to keep singing Christmas carols even after Christmas.

The show kicked off on Dec. 27, and will run every day at 4 pm until Dec. 31. This year, the musical lineup features Cathy Grier, Bruce Newbern, Dennis Keith Johnson and John Rood Lewis.

The latter two musicians might look familiar if you’ve been keeping a close eye on recent Northern Sky shows. Johnson, a bassist, songwriter and bandleader, and Lewis, a guitarist and bassist, have played in the pit bands for Sunflowered, The Fisherman’s Daughters, We Like It Where? and other productions.

Newbern has offered his percussion skills to the pit band at the theater, too. The only Northern Sky newbie of the group – though definitely not to the Door County-and-beyond music scene – is Cathy Grier, who will provide the soulful vocals that underpin her own unique brand of blues.

“The musical excellence of our company has been in part largely attributable to the stellar playing of our band members, who are often never seen,” said Northern Sky’s artistic director Jeff Herbst. “This gives us the opportunity to showcase the considerable onstage talents of Dennis, Jon, and Bruce, as well. Welcoming Cathy to our stage to round out the foursome is the perfect way to introduce her to our Northern Sky audiences.”

The quartet’s setlist will feature Christmastime classics alongside festive originals. Audience giveaways will be sprinkled throughout the shows, and after the curtains close, audience members can head out to the fire ring and cozy up with bakery and hot beverages.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students, and $15 for children 12 and under. All seats are reserved.
