Hybrid Hairpin 5K Run/Walk Set for July 4

Friends of Gibraltar (FOG) will host the July 4 Hairpin 5K Run/Walk both in person and virtually this year. With safety in mind for the many individuals and families that do the run, FOG is offering flexible options for participating and submitting times.

“There’s so many unpredictable things, so if people decide they want to participate [in person] that morning, they can; and if not, they can still participate virtually,” said FOG project coordinator Vinni Chomeau.

About 100 people signed up to run the virtual Hairpin last year, and Chomeau said the organizers are keeping precautions in place this year for the in-person options so that more people can continue the three-decade-plus July 4 tradition.

Proceeds from the Hairpin Run go to the Gibraltar Schools. FOG supports experiential education for grades K-12 by funding field trips and programs at The Ridges Sanctuary, The Clearing and Door County Auditorium entirely from the run proceeds.

The race will start earlier this year to give participants room to begin in waves and spread out. Participants should arrive at the Noble Square Park, 4167 Main St. in Fish Creek, at 7:15 am, and they should wear face masks in the start and finish areas.

Online registration is required for both virtual and in-person participants. Those who want to submit run times can do so virtually. Adults can still register for $25, and children 12 and younger can register for $10. T-shirts and hats are available for purchase at hairpinrun.com.
