Idea Gallery Highlights Sculptures by George Ouimette

Idea Gallery, a visionary gallery of contemporary art, is showcasing the ceramic sculptures of George Ouimette, who teaches art at Southern Door High School. This is his second season with Idea Gallery.

“George’s work is literally visionary … On his walks, he picks up branches and formulates his ceramics and glazes around the characteristics of the natural flow and coloration of the wood,” said gallery director Dan Cross.

Ouimette graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in art education.

“The first two years of college, I considered myself primarily a drawer and printer,” Ouimette said, “but I was unknowingly being lured to the three-dimensional side of art while taking courses such as fibers, glass and sculpture. The clay class was the final push in changing my focus.”

Acquiring knowledge in both two- and three-dimensional art has allowed him to develop a distinctive, mixed-media approach.

Idea Gallery, 6551 Cty T in West Jacksonport, is open daily, 11 am – 5 pm. Call 920.655.1340 or follow the gallery on Facebook to learn more.
