Jacksonport Historical Society Purchases Land for Museum

The Jacksonport Historical Society recently purchased 4.3 acres of land on the south edge of Jacksonport on Hwy 57. The society’s vision is of developing a museum, growing membership, and further developing youth outreach programs as well as continuing to publish family histories, collecting artifacts and educating the community.

An integral part of this vision is to bring alive the history of Jacksonport, and with the formation of a building committee in January of 2006, the society initiated the process of finding a property for a museum.

In the past 14 years, the Jacksonport Historical Society has accumulated a wealth of donations and is running out of space to store and preserve the artifacts which have been so generously donated. Also, families have said they have historical items they would like to donate to the society once there is a museum. Therefore, the Jacksonport Historical Society board felt as though the time was right to achieve one of the long awaited goals of having a museum to preserve and display Jacksonport’s history. With this acreage, the society will have an area where it can grow and preserve the history of Jacksonport alive for many generations to come.

The board has accomplished the first stage of purchasing the land and now has a long journey ahead raising funds to get to the next stage.
