Kids Can Build a Boat at Marina Fest

The Sister Bay Lions Bill Steger Memorial Boat Building tent will open to give children ages pre-school to12 years old the chance to build their own wooden motorboat or sailboat as part of the Sister Bay Marina Fest celebration.

The tent will be located on the lawn near the marina at Sister Bay Waterfront Park. Over the years children have built more than 3,000 boats to the delight of their grandparents ,parents and  especially the children themselves.

Bill Steger, a former marine engineer in the Navy and Lions Club president, created the event, and following his death in 2005 the Lions Club decided to continue and expand the project as a service to the community. Every year Lions Club members spend approximately 200 hours cutting out and sanding the wood into boats, drilling the masts and beams, and sewing and wiring the sails.

Donations for the project have come from Carlson-Erickson Builders, Sister Bay Ace Hardware, Vans Builders, and Wisconsin Builders Supply.

Bring your “boat makers” to the tent on Saturday, Sept. 2. The event runs from 11am to 4 pm with sign-up for time slots beginning at 9:30 am.  Help the Lions Club continue making their annual donation of $750 to the International Lions Leadership Dog Program.
