Letter to the Editor: Family Planning Funding is Needed

Defunding Planned Parenthood and cutting back on worldwide family planning funding is a disastrous decision for the future of the world.

I was appalled by what I read in Thomas Friedman’s book Thank You for Being Late. World population is projected to increase by 2.4 billion people to 9.7 billion by 2050. The populations of 28 African nations are projected to double by 2050. Nigeria will have a larger population than the U. S. by 2050. Mothers in Niger have an average of seven children each. By 2022 India will exceed China’s population. All families need to have the knowledge and resources to choose the number of children they can love and rear.

The demand on the world’s resources will increase even faster than population—more fossil fuels, more electricity, more water, more food. Many of the fastest growing countries are threatened by a lack of water.

If you agree that America should continue to fund family planning services in the U. S. and around the world, please call Congressman Mike Gallagher (202.225.5665), Senator Tammy Baldwin (202.224.5653) and Senator Ron Johnson (202.224.5323).
