Letter to the Editor: A Sheriff for Kitchens

I have had the honor of serving my community for better part of my adult life. I have worked alongside many appointed and elected officials in various capacities and numerous initiatives. Every now and then a special person enters into my life and brings a new level of enthusiasm and professionalism in their style of leadership. I have found Representative Joel Kitchens to be one of those leaders.

While I know that Rep. Kitchens has worked tirelessly on a great range of topics and concerns, my perspective is from the vantage point of local law enforcement. I have contacted Representative Kitchens on matters which have arisen from the local level and have received nothing but sincere interest, and a commitment to follow up. Recently I had contacted his office in regards to a gap in our state laws related narcotics in the jail setting. Joel immediately tasked one of his staff to work along me and develop language that would be effective not just for our jail, but would apply to similar facilities throughout the State of Wisconsin.

Being receptive and responsive to requests is only part of what impresses me in Representative Kitchens. I have on many occasions received a call from Representative Kitchens seeking input from the local level on pending or proposed legislation in an effort to ascertain feedback on how our community could be impacted. These gestures of honest concern and genuine humility are the true mark of a leader.

As with any elected position there are efforts and actions which go unnoticed by many, but none the less are vital to effective representation. One of these efforts that Representative Kitchens has been steadfast to is attendance to many of the evening meetings held by either our townships or county committees. When you consider that these meetings are being attended not just in Kewaunee County but throughout his district, you are able grasp the level of dedication Representative Kitchens has to his duty.

During his first term in office, Joel has represented our entire community. He has worked with problem solvers to find a solution, not just with the loudest voice in the room. I trust Joel Kitchens as my state representative, and I am voting for him on Nov. 8th.

Matt Joski, Kewaunee County Sheriff

Kewaunee, Wis.
