Letter to the Editor: Tammy Baldwin Opposes Kavanaugh Nomination

If Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed as the next new Supreme Court justice, I believe we can see major troubling changes in our existing laws. After reading some of his past rulings, I don’t see Judge Kavanaugh as a moderate Republican such as former Supreme Court justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Harry Blackmun or retiring Anthony Kennedy. It seems to me that he was chosen to advance the current right wing agenda.

We might see the overturn of legal precedents such as Roe v. Wade, sending women’s health care back to the dark ages. We might see it ruled legal for businesses to refuse services to gay customers based on religious grounds. We might see further “legalization” of voter suppression laws.

On July 12, 2018, Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin announced that she will oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. She said:  “The stakes are too high for the American people who do not want the Supreme Court to advance a political agenda to overturn the law of the land on health care for people with pre-existing conditions, women’s reproductive health, and the constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans.”

She went on to say:  “The people of Wisconsin need a fair and independent Supreme Court justice who will stand up for them, not for powerful special interests. I don’t have confidence that Judge Kavanaugh would be that justice.”

If you agree with Tammy Baldwin’s stand on this nomination, I urge you to vote for her in the upcoming November election. Elections have consequences, and we need to have a US Senator who is fair, ethical and willing to work across the aisle and to do what’s best for all Wisconsinites and our country.
