Manners Matter: Choosing Not to Get Vaccinated

Dear Mary Pat,

My parents don’t want to get the COVID-19 vaccine. They’re in their late 80s and have said they’re healthy and not concerned about the virus. They’re cautious, and always wear their masks, and haven’t really been around others too much – or so they tell me. But I’m totally freaking out. I want them to be safe. How do I make them get the vaccination?

Signed,

Doting Daughter

Dear Doting Daughter,

There’s nothing you can do to “make them” get vaccinated. It sounds as though they just don’t want to do it. If they’re taking other precautions and are able to make rational decisions for themselves, you have to respect their wishes. They’ve made it through the past year in good health, so focus on that and let go of what you can’t control.

Good luck,

Mary Pat
