• The Door Kewaunee Business and Education Partnership (DKBEP) unveiled this year’s student-built home in Luxemburg May 26. It marked the completion of the third DKBEP High School Home Construction Project. The program is an effort to grow the local construction industry’s skilled workforce while providing real-world learning experiences for area youth.

Eleven high school students representing Algoma, Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door school districts joined forces with the Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA), Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and the DKBEP to build a home from start to finish during the 2009-10 school year.

• Retired Door County lieutenant Bill Larson announced his candidacy for sheriff. Larson will run as a republican against two-term incumbent Terry Vogel. A primary will be held Sept. 14.

• Jacksonport selected Tom Wilson to fill its open Supervisor #2 seat at its town board meeting May 25. Wilson assumes the seat vacated by Jeanne Majeski when she ascended to the board chair earlier this month.

• Though officials from the City of Sturgeon Bay and Door County government have asked the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to speed up work on the Michigan Street Bridge, word is late July of 2011 is the earliest it will open.

The delay in opening the bridge is a result of the painting schedule. In a letter May 19, DOT Secretary Frank Busalacchi told Door County Administrator Mike Serpe that painting in the winter months would add another $384,000 to the cost of the project.

• Washington Island’s Death’s Door Spirits white whiskey earned a spot among Food & Wine magazine’s listing of the best new American whiskeys.

• The Republican contest for the right to challenge incumbent United States Sen. Russ Feingold (D – Middleton) cleared up a bit. Dick Leinenkugel dropped out of the race, leaving Ron Johnson, Terrance Wall, and Dave Westlake to fight it out.

• Egg Harbor finished 10th in Budget Travel’s voting for America’s Coolest Small Town. Ely, MN finished first among 21 finalists.
