Nearly 1,000 participate in 2nd Door County Half Marathon

Door County became Runner’s World May 2, as over 1,000 people registered for the second Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K in Peninsula State Park.

Jason Ryf dominated the field on his way to his second straight victory in the Door County Half Marathon.

Jason Ryf of Oshkosh repeated as half marathon winner, dominating the field again with a time of 1:09:02. Krista Cornelius finished first among women at 1:26:09, and Justin Freiberg took the 5K crown with a time of 18:00 minutes.

Runners enjoyed perfect race conditions and a post-race bash at Clark Park in downtown Fish Creek. Innkeepers in Fish Creek and Sister Bay reported big increases in room rentals over the same weekend two years ago. Restaurants and retailers reported stellar business as well.

The 952 finishers (693 finished the Half Marathon, and 261 finished the 5K) was a jump of nearly 400 over last year. Next year’s race is scheduled for May 1.

1) Krista Cornelius, 1:26:09; 2) Laura Ankrum, 1:28:12; 3) Liz Terhorst, 1:30:03.

• Nicolet Bay 5K

1) Justin Freiberg, 18:00; 2) Ted Gurman, 18:40; 3) Joe Moyer, 18.55.
