• The Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA) is still accepting applications for two $1,000 scholarships it will award to Door County high school students who show enthusiasm and promise in the home building profession.

 

 

Applicants must complete an essay answering why they are interested in the home building industry, have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and intend to pursue their education in the home building industry.

• Warren Marik, a graduate of St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in southeastern Wisconsin, will speak about “Afghanistan and Pakistan” after the monthly membership meeting of the Democratic Party of Door County March 25.

 

 

Marik was an intelligence specialist in the army and served in Turkey and Vietnam. Marik joined the CIA in 1972 and retired in 1997. He served in Afghanistan and Pakistan during the Afghan-Soviet War. Since retirement, he’s made several trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The meeting and presentation is at the Door County Library in Sturgeon Bay and begins at 7 pm.

 

 

Door-Tran implemented a Free Car Pool Matching and a Half-Price Travel Voucher Program in November 2008 that has now served over 165 residents and subsidized over 6,000 trips for people to get to work, stores, medical facilities, and more.

 

 

The program allows Door County residents with income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to purchase up to $200 worth of travel vouchers at half-price per month. Businesses, organizations, and agencies may also purchase Door-Tran Travel Vouchers for their customers at full price. The Door County-Green Bay Shuttle, Door County Island Hopper, Service Taxi Cab, and the Washington Island Community Van accept the vouchers.

• The Northeastern Wisconsin Arts Council, newARTS, has made scholarship applications available online at http://www.newartscouncil.org. Competitive awards are presented to high school and collegiate art students in performing arts, visual arts and literary arts categories. The newARTS competition is open to any high school student attending a school in Brown County and to any college or university student attending an institution in Brown County or maintaining a Brown County address if attending a school outside the county. Scholarship applications can be accessed at http://www.newartscouncil.org. Applications are due by March 31.

 

 

• Agricultural Heritage and Resources, Inc. of Kewaunee County has applied for a $25,000 grant through Pepsi’s Refresh Everything Grant and needs everyone’s votes.

 

 

The grant will fund 20 more Barn Quilts in Door, Kewaunee, Brown, and Manitowoc Counties. It will also fund an organic kitchen garden and orchard that will benefit food pantries in the four-County area. The grant is vote driven. The top 10 proposals will receive the grant. • Northern Door County high school seniors will take part in Senior Survival, a workshop coordinated by the Family Centers of Door County, April 1. The workshop offers high school seniors a variety of “survival” skills to help them navigate the world beyond high school.

 

 

Over 200 high school seniors from Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol and Southern Door Schools attended this workshop on March 17 at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Sturgeon Bay campus. Washington Island and Gibraltar seniors will take part April 1 at the Northern Door YMCA and Gibraltar School from 8:15 am – noon.

 

 

The event will feature guest speakers Myles Dannhausen, Jr. and Kourtney Krah, who will share personal experiences of overcoming challenges they faced after high school. The Job Center will give tips on job hunting, resume writing, and interviews. The Wellness Center and the Sexual Assault Center will present a workshop on healthy dating relationships, and there is even a segment on self-defense with Martial Arts Instructor Teri Rohacek. The Family Centers’ will address the topic of keeping your family and community ties while venturing out on your own.

• Homeowners can find out what’s new and popular in home building and remodeling during the Door County Home & Garden Expo March 26 – 27 at Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center in Sturgeon Bay.

 

 

The expo will take place from 4 – 8 pm Friday, March 26 and 9 am – 4 pm Saturday, March 27. The event, sponsored by the Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA), gives people an opportunity to talk with local experts, who represent all facets of the home industry. More than 30 exhibits showcase builders, cabinets and countertops, flooring, interior design and window coverings, heating and air conditioning, energy, decks, landscaping, banking and more.

 

 

“Whether you are looking to build, remodel or get up-to-date, the Home Builders Association’s marquee event – the Home and Garden Expo – is a great way to meet area professionals and discover all the choices available in today’s exciting home industry,” said Adam Deuchert, president of the DCHBA and owner of A.J. • Door-Tran and the Door County Transportation Consortium will be meeting April 12, noon – 4 pm, at Prince of Peace Church in Sturgeon Bay. The agenda includes a buffet lunch and guest speakers State Representative Garey Bies and County Administrator Michael Serpe. The meeting will cover the 2009 accomplishments and the 2010 plans, as well as touch upon the shared ride taxi system that is coming soon.

• The Wisconsin Humanities Council awarded Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands a $10,000 grant to complete a comprehensive humanities project regarding Plum and Pilot Islands. The project will include two public programs on Washington Island and the development of a curriculum to be incorporated into the Washington Island School system developed by Washington Island teacher Steve Waldron with the help of the Friends Group. The main goal of the project is to create a comprehensive history of the islands, and the Friends Group is seeking any and all information about the islands, including personal histories, documents and photos pertaining to the islands. • The Peninsula Music Festival is accepting scholarship applications. This three year, $1,000 per year, scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who desires to further his or her education in music. The recipient must be an outstanding music student who has demonstrated his or her ability as a performer and has shown a sustained interest in music-related activities. The student must major or minor in music in college.

 

 

An application is available at http://www.musicfestival.com. The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors will select the recipient.

• The Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center received a $3,364 Joint Effort Marketing grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism to promote its Groovin’ Sisterhood Bahama Mamas weekend. This event is expected to generate economic impact of at least $65,000 for the local area.

 

 

“The Joint Effort Marketing grants awarded to this deserving tourism promotion demonstrates the power of travel and its ability to generate significant economic benefits,” Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble said.

 

 

The Groovin’ Sisterhood Bahama Mamas getaway will be held April 23 – 25 and will be a weekend for women to come together, share fun times, learn, shop and create memories through a variety of special classes and activities. The Department of Tourism funds will be used for radio, television and online advertising.

• Door County resident Norman J. Wilsman, DVM, Ph.D. was awarded the Kappa Delta Award at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The Kappa Delta Sorority and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) presented research awards to scientists helping to close the gap between basic research and clinical medicine in areas of musculoskeletal health.

 

 

Wilsman, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was honored with co-author Cornelia E. Farnum, DVM, Ph.D., of Cornell University, for the paper “Analyzing the Growth Plate in Four Dimensions – A Thirty-year Perspective on Growth Plate Dynamics.”

• Briggsville Gardens won the award for Best Business entry at the Sturgeon Bay Saint Patrick’s Day Parade March 13. Honorable Mention went to Sneakers and Boots. Best Non-Profit entry was awarded to the Sturgeon Bay Jaycees with Honorable Mention to the Miss Door County Princesses. Best Irish Theme to Clan O’Hern and Honorable Mention to Pirates in the Harbor; and Best Tavern entry was presented to Van’s Bar & Grill.

 

 

• Brenda Abrahamson took Grand Champion honors at the chili cook-offs at both Door County YMCA Program Centers March 8.

 

 

A select group of judges for each location sampled all the entries and chose the winning batch. Amy Stephens took first for Wild Rice Mushroom Turkey, Carly Sarkis second with Chicken Dumpling and Cindy Livingston third with Brett Favre Chili. People’s choice in Sturgeon Bay went to Steve Wisniewski at Door County Memorial Hospital for his Lobster Bisque.

 

 

Northern Door’s first place winner was Janice Thomas from the Savory Spoon with a French Lentil with Root Vegetables, second place went to Todd Bennett from the Chef’s Hat for his Black Bean Andouille Sausage with Wild Rice, and third place was Audrey Grasse with a Roasted Squash with Apple Soup.

 

 

Special thanks to the dozens of soup chefs and servers who helped make the Souper Stars Challenge possible. All proceeds from the chili cook-offs go towards the 2010 Door County YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.
