Obituary for Catherine Yocum

Catherine Yocum, 89, passed into the presence of her Lord 10 PM Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home, Sister Bay, WI.

She was born November 11, 1925 in Milton, PA to the late Elizabeth Byers Yocum and George J. Yocum Sr. Ms Yocum graduated from the Milton, PA High School after which she pursued further education at East Stroudsburg (PA) State Teachers College. She graduating in May, 1947 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Health Education. She also studied in Tempe, AZ obtaining a Master’s Degree from Arizona State University in 1954.

Catherine’s teaching career included: Milton, PA middle school; Arizona State University; University, Bridgeport, CT; Western Michigan, Kalamazoo, MI; Amerikan Kiz Koleg, Istanbul, Turkey; University of Florida, Gainesville and Beloit College, Beloit, WI.

Retirement brought about a new venture, owning and operating The Farmer’s Daughter Summer Kitchen in Door County, WI with two other women, also retired college professors. The Summer Kitchen was in operation for 13 years, open summers only.

Catherine enjoyed travel, birding, photography and gardening. She was a participant in church activities where she was living at the time and in her later years enjoyed the First Baptist Church, especially the Women’s Bible Studies in Sister Bay.

She is survived by the following sisters: Mrs. Lorraine Tanner, Turbotville, PA; Mrs. Margaret (Marvin) Klaassen, Milton, PA; Mrs. Sandra Forbes, Farmersville, TX and two sisters-in-laws; Mrs. Eileen Yocum, Watsontown, PA and Mrs Shirley Yocum, Gettysburg, PA. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
