Obituary: Helen Jane Brauer

Helen Jane Brauer, 89, of the Town of Sevastopol, died at home early Wednesday morning, Feb. 7, 2018.

She was born Dec. 8, 1928 to the late John “Jack” Strahan and Helen “Pearl” (Maples) Strahan. Helen graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1946. She was united in marriage to Leonard Joseph Brauer on Sept. 24, 1949 at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Institute where she remained a lifelong member. They were blessed with more than 44 years of marriage. Lenny preceded her in death on March 26, 1994.

Helen enjoyed being with people and worked at the By-Way in Sturgeon Bay, Kerscher’s Superette in Valmy, and at The Farm. Above all, she took care of family and home.

As a member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Helen served on the Ladies Altar Society, the women’s service group, and sang in the adult choir. She had a love for music and playing piano. Helen became a “baseball wife and mother” with husband, Lenny, and all four sons playing ball.

Her love will live on in the hearts of her family, and she will be deeply missed by her four sons and two daughters, Jim (Linda) Brauer of Sevastopol, Joe (Mary) Brauer of Rhinelander, Jane (Jim) Frisch of Brown Deer, Joy (Tom) Schram of Wichita, KS, Jeff Brauer, and Jay (Karen) Brauer, both of Sevastopol; thirteen grandchildren, Lori (Scott) Muench, Polly Brauer, Greg Brauer, and Kelly (Jason) Phelps, Bridget Oettinger, Jen (Jeremiah) Johnson, and Jesse (Matt Schmidt) Brauer, James Frisch, Meghan (Van Thanh Dao) Frisch, and Eric (Elizabeth) Frisch, Christopher Schram, and Claire and Grace Brauer; nine great-grandchildren, and many friends.

Helen is now reunited with her husband, Lenny; son, Leonard Gerard; and sister, Jean Graf.

Her life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 am on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018 at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Institute with Fr. Robert Stegmann as celebrant. Helen will be laid to rest in the church cemetery beside her husband, Lenny.

Visitation for family and friends will be held 3-7 pm at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay on Feb. 18, 2018 with the Rosary to be prayed at 2:40 pm and a parish wake service to be held at 6:45 pm. Visitation will resume at the church, Monday morning, from 9:30 until 10:45 am.
